Abstract: Caring for a near one afflicted with Alzheimer's disease involves a moral responsibility going well beyond the carrying out of simple everyday tasks. The article discusses transformation of the carer-cared for relationship as the basis of this moral responsibility. Carried out with twenty carers, mainly spouses, this grounded theory doctoral study (2012) concludes that the asymmetry and reciprocity of the relationship are not contradictory. Rather, they jointly contribute to the construction of the moral responsibility of those caring for a near one suffering from dementia
