Abstract: This master’s thesis in research and creation looks into the evolution of an individual, as influenced by one or many external figures, as well as his progression from confusion to self-awareness. The reflexive part of this dissertation explores the theme of wavering identity as it unfolds in two autobiographical stories of Annie Ernaux, Mémoire de fille (2016) and L’autre fille (2011). The first chapter attempts to define the narrator-character’s feeling of incompleteness, which leaves her with a lack of self-definition, her sense of self revolving around that of others ; the second appraises this Other’s ascendancy on her identity’s constructive process, while the latter reflects upon the act of writing, each of this study’s works’ form and the way the “I” reaches a better selfacknowledgement through reflecting on the Other. The literary portion of this dissertation, a fragmented novel entitled Jours de plomb, depicts a character’s reassessment of his value as an individual in the aftermath of his twin’s untimely death. Throughout short chapters, the protagonist, Pierre-Olivier, confronts himself to the opinion of four close ones, develops an internal discourse and progresses through the difficult mourning and absence fueled search for identity.
