Abstract: Twenty-three opine-utilizing strains of bacteria have been isolated from about 100 soil and crown gall samples, and tested for the following characters : type of opine utilized, fluorescence on King's B medium, virulence on general hosts, biotype, sensitivity to agrocin 84, number of plasmid species, and conjugal transfer of the capacity for opine catabolism. Seven strains were virulent on general hosts and were therefore identified as Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and four produced a fluorescent pigment on King's B medium, a property characteristic of some Pseudomonas species.
