Abstract: This master’s thesis aims to provide a comprehensive picture of current and historical phosphorus inputs to Lake Nairne to allow local stakeholders to target their actions to achieve lake restoration. The internal load, which represents one-third of the total annual phosphorus load has been estimated. Inputs from the watershed were also estimated using a mass-balance model. The results show that the external phosphorus load has declined by 55 % since 1950, but is still well above the natural load. To improve this situation, possible solutions are proposed in the last section. This study provides a better understanding of the impact of land use evolution on lake water quality. In addition, the methods can be applied to other watersheds facing similar problems in order to improve sustainable lake restoration.
