Abstract: | The study evaluated the risk of recurrent coronary heart disease (CHD) after the exposure to a low general social support (GSS) or to a low work social support (WSS). The cohort was 972 women and men recruited from Quebec’s hospitals. The events looked for were a fatal CHD, a non-fatal myocardial infarction and an instable angina. During the six-year follow-up, 206 events had been found. Cox regression was used for analyzing the data. Our results showed a significant moderate association between the chronically exposure to GSS and the risk of recurrent CHD [adjusted hazard ratio: 1.66 (1.08 - 2.57)]. No association was observed between the exposure to WSS and the risk of recurrent CHD. Therefore, our study shows that the exposure to GSS (not to WSS) is associated to the risk of recurrent CHD. These results confirm those of previous studies. |
