Abstract: This thesis explores the motivations and practices of seasonal campers in the province of Quebec. Following Setha Low’s conceptualization of urban development and conflicts, the author examines the different ways in which campers, year after year, socially produce and construct space, time and sociability in their campground. The thesis is grounded in an ethnographic study completed during the summer of 2006 in two campgrounds located near the city of Montreal. The research results show that, far from being passive consumers, seasonal campers contribute actively to the spatial development of camping grounds and sites, to the organization and management of collective activities and to the creation of an environment which facilitates social exchange.
