Mise à niveau des connaissances en mathématiques  : étude avant-après auprès d’étudiants de premier cycle en sciences infirmières au Canada

Abstract: Background: Deficiencies in mathematical skills have consistently been described in nursing students, but there is no data in Quebec. Method: We have evaluated the capacity of a self-administered fun web-based course (including texts, videos and quiz) to overcome the main knowledge gaps. The students had to answer a twenty-five questions test before and after the course. A paired t-test was used to determine whether the means were different between the two tests (alpha=0.05) Results: The self-administered course significantly improved the knowledge of the students. The score went from 14.6/25 before the course to 17.5/25 after the course with the same test (n=37; Paired-t test, p <0.0001). The difficulties identified were those concerning the ratios and the units of measure. Conclusion: A web-based self-administered course could ensure nursing students have the basic mathematics skills required.
