À l'heure où le concept de l'industrie 4.0 s'impose dans le monde manufacturier comme un nouveau modèle de production interconnectée, les entreprises tentent de s'adapter en adoptant différentes technologies liées à l'internet des objets, la collecte et l'analyse de données, l'automatisation des processus, la robotisation et l'intelligence artificielle. Devant l'incertitude causée par l'indétermination du concept de l'industrie 4.0 tant sur la production que sur les effets sur le travail, cette étude propose un regard sur les processus d'enquête et de résolution de ces incertitudes en utilisant le concept d'expérimentation institutionnelle. À partir d'une étude de cas dans une entreprise manufacturière du secteur de l'aérospatiale au Danemark, cette étude vise à mieux comprendre comment les acteurs locaux patronaux et syndicaux expérimentent avec leurs institutions pour répondre à cette incertitude. Les données recueillies sur une période de trois années (entretiens, observations et documents) ont fait l'objet d'une analyse qualitative processuelle (Abdallah, Lusiani, & Langley, 2019) dont les résultats mettent en lumière les sous-processus itératifs de l'expérimentation permettant de comprendre cette dernière comme un processus d'enquête créatif, dynamique, par des acteurs situés et dotés de certaines compétences (Dewey, 1967). De plus, en remettant les acteurs locaux au sein d'un tissu institutionnel formel et informel, l'analyse permet de dégager les différentes ressources de pouvoir utilisées par les acteurs locaux et de révéler le caractère multiniveau de l'expérimentation institutionnelle. Sur le plan théorique, l'utilisation de l'approche pragmatiste américaine de John Dewey offre une compréhension fine du phénomène de l'expérimentation par l'illustration des « habitudes » expérimentales des acteurs danois ce qui contribue à alléger son aspect mécanique (C. F. Sabel & Zeitlin, 2012b) en montrant plutôt l'aspect créatif des acteurs au niveau micro dans la création de ressources collectives (biens collectifs) à des niveaux sectoriels et régionaux (Herrigel, 2012b; Ostrom, 1990). Concernant la question des changements institutionnels, les résultats de cette étude s'ajoutent à celles promouvant la thèse des changements graduels et processuels (Ilsøe, 2018) et participent à une littérature existante qui appuie l'hypothèse de la capacité d'adaptation des institutions danoises au regard des nouvelles conditions du numérique (Dølvik & Steen, 2018; Rolandsson, Alasoini, Berglund et coll., 2020). Cette étude ajoute également un récit empirique et théorique éclairant les conditions institutionnelles facilitant l'expérimentation en marge des institutions nationales, dans une forme additionnelle de régulation du travail. Enfin, plutôt qu'un récit d'un chamboulement des relations d'emploi à l'ère de l'industrie 4.0, cette étude de cas illustre comment certaines conditions institutionnelles pouvant être associées à une économie négociée ou plus récemment à des institutions « expérimentalistes » (P. H. Kristensen & Morgan, 2012a) permettent aux acteurs locaux de la relation d'emploi d'introduire le numérique dans l'organisation du travail tout en maintenant une certaine continuation de la reproduction du modèle danois.
In recent years, Industry 4.0 has emerged as a new model of interconnected production in the manufacturing world. However, while companies seek to adapt to the new realities using different novel technologies, including the Internet of Things, data collection and analysis, process automation, robotization, and Artificial Intelligence, the concept of Industry 4.0 remains indeterminate and uncertain in both production and work. Using the concept of institutional experimentation, this study analyzes how local actors (union and management) investigate and resolve indeterminacy of Industry 4.0. Based on a case study in a manufacturing company in the aerospace sector in Denmark, this study aims to better understand 1) how local union and management actors' experiment with their institutions to respond to this uncertainty and 2) the enabling institutional conditions supporting actors in their experiment. The data collected over a period of three years (interviews, observations and documents) were analysed through a qualitative processual analysis (Abdallah, Lusiani, & Langley, 2019). Results highlight the iterative sub-processes of the experimentation which help built its definition as a creative and dynamic inquiry process by actors institutionnally situated and endowed with certain skills (Dewey, 1967). In addition, by placing local actors within a formal and informal institutional setting, the analysis shows the different power resources used by local actors and reveals the multilevel nature of institutional experimentation. On a theoretical level, the use of the American pragmatist approach of John Dewey (1967) offers a detailed understanding of the phenomenon of experimentation by illustrating the experimental "habits" of Danish local actors, which helps to lighten its mechanical aspect (CF Sabel & Zeitlin, 2012b) by showing a rather creative and processual inquiry at the micro level while creating collective resources (collective goods) at sectoral and regional levels (Herrigel, 2012b; Ostrom, 1990). With regard to institutional change, this study enriches previous accounts of gradual and processual changes (Ilsøe, 2018) and demonstrates the ability of Danish industrial relations institutions to adapt to new digital work transformation (Dølvik & Steen, 2018; Rolandsson et al., 2020). On empirical grounds, this study illuminates the institutional conditions that enable and facilitate these kind of experimentations operating at the margins of national institutions. Finally, shifting from the conventional narrative about the disruption of employment relations in the era of Industry 4.0, this case study illustrates how certain institutional conditions associated with a negotiated economy-or, more recently, "experimentalists institutions" (Kristensen & Morgan, 2012a)-allow local employment relation actors to introduce digital technologies into the organization of work while maintaining a certain reproduction of the Danish model.
