Problem gambling in adolescence : an analysis conducted from the actor’s perspective
(Taylor & Francis group, 2017-02-28) Tremblay, Joël; Savard, Annie-Claude; Turcotte, Daniel
The objective of this study is, by using the general theory of rationality (GTR), to better understand the rationale underlying gambling behavior in adolescents considered to have gambling problems. The study explore gambling associated benefits, negative consequences of gambling, and the adolescents’ perceptions of the severity of their gambling behavior. The qualitative research is based on semi-structured interviews with 31 adolescents considered as having gambling problems. The analysis revealed that gambling behavior are based on a threefold rationality: instrumental, cognitive and axiological. The GTR allows to better understand why most of them do not consider to have gambling problems.

Measuring stakeholder participation in evaluation : an empirical validation of the Participatory Evaluation Measurement Instrument (PEMI)
(Thousand Oaks, CA : Sage Publications, 2012-08-31) Daigneault, Pierre-Marc; Jacob, Steve; Tremblay, Joël
Background. Stakeholder participation is an important trend in the field of program evaluation. Although a few measurement instruments have been proposed, they either have not been empirically validated or do not cover the full content of the concept. Objectives. This study consists of a first empirical validation of a measurement instrument that fully covers the content of participation, namely the Participatory Evaluation Measurement Instrument (PEMI). It specifically examines 1) the intercoder reliability of scores derived by two research assistants on published evaluation cases; 2) the convergence between the scores of coders and those of key respondents (i.e., authors); and 3) the convergence between the authors’ scores on the PEMI and the Evaluation Involvement Scale (EIS). Sample. A purposive sample of 40 cases drawn from the evaluation literature was used to assess reliability. One author per case in this sample was then invited to participate in a survey; 25 fully usable questionnaires were received. Measures. Stakeholder participation was measured on nominal and ordinal scales. Cohen’s kappa, the intraclass correlation coefficient and Spearman’s rho were used to assess reliability and convergence. Results. Reliability results ranged from fair to excellent. Convergence between coders’ and authors’ scores ranged from poor to good. Scores derived from the PEMI and the EIS were moderately associated. Conclusions. Evidence from this study is strong in the case of intercoder reliability and ranges from weak to strong in the case of convergent validation. Globally, this suggests that the PEMI can produce scores that are both reliable and valid.

Integrative couple treatment for pathological gambling/ICT-PG : description of the therapeutic process
(Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine, 2015-09-01) Tremblay, Joël; Savard, Annie-Claude; Blanchette-Martin, Nadine; Dufour, Magali H.; Bertrand, Karine.; Ferland, Francine; Côté, Mélissa; Saint-Jacques, Marianne
Problem gambling can have profound consequences on a person's life, consequences that range from financial, psychological to relational and that affect, in particular, couple relationships. Despite these widely documented relational consequences, most therapies for problem gambling favour an individual approach. Nonetheless, in the field of addiction, several studies have documented the efficacy of a couple approach. A few results from preliminary studies carried out with gamblers would seem to suggest that a couple approach might also be effective in this field. Our team thus developed the Integrative Couple Treatment for Pathological Gambling or ICT-PG, a therapy in which the treatment for pathological gambling starts by working with the couple from the very first meeting. First off, it targets the reduction or cessation of gambling behaviour, but also a reduction in the psychological distress of the two partners and an improvement in relationship satisfaction and mutual support. The usual work on diverse dimensions related to gambling is conducted with the gambler, and this in the presence and with the support of his partner. The treatment aims to eliminate those behaviours in the couple that might facilitate gambling and to reinforce behaviours that support the cessation of gambling. Another goal of the ICT-PG is for the couple to learn better skills for communication, conflict resolution, and mutual reinforcement, always with the objective of facilitating the reduction and cessation of gambling habits. This paper is a description of the therapeutic process of the ICT-PG.

Problem gambling among adolescents: toward a social and interactionist reading
(Australian Institute for Gambling Research, 2015-01-12) Tremblay, Joël; Savard, Annie-Claude; Turcotte, Daniel
There are two aspects that distinguish the approaches used to conceptualize problem gambling in adolescence. The first aspect concerns the type of variables involved in conceptualizing the phenomenon: most approaches integrate variables of an individual nature in their modelling and give little consideration to social type variables. The second aspect concerns the distinction between determinism and interactionism: many of the approaches seem to follow a determinist line of thinking and few consider people as social actors in interaction with their environment. Consequently, this article aims to conceptually prepare the ground for later studies that will adopt a more sociological and interactionist approach. To do so, the theoretical perspectives that are most commonly used in conceptualizing the phenomenon will be analysed by way of the two above aspects. A new analysis perspective will then be presented, namely the general theory of rationality (GTR) by Raymond Boudon. The GTR proposes a theoretical reversal to other approaches by focusing on social actors and variables of a social nature rather than on a person's psychology. In this sense, the theory adopts a viewpoint that has not been greatly employed in the analysis of adolescent problem gambling.

(Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, 2016-05-19) Tremblay, Joël; Savard, Annie-Claude; Turcotte, Daniel
