The past, present and future of genomic scans for selection

Abstract: The notion of utilizing expected patterns of variation produced by genetic hitchhiking to scan genomes for recent adaptive fixations has remained prevalent in the field of population genetics for many years, being first inspired by the seminal study of Lewontin & Krakauer (1973). In this vein, test statistics have been designed to identify regions of reduced variation, skewed site frequency spectra, elevated linkage disequilibrium, and/or elevated rates of interpopulation or interspecies divergence. Along with these dozens of test statistics have come hundreds of empirical applications in a wide array of organisms.
